Contraindications

A contraindication is a reason not to massage. They can be broken down into 3 categories:

MEDICAL CONTRAINDICATIONS:

The client must have written permission from their GP or consultant, or sign a disclaimer form indemnifying the therapist from any adverse reactions, prior to the treatment.

Some examples of medical contraindications are:

- Pregnancy (after 1st trimester)

- Asthma

- Diabetes

- Thrombosis

- Phlebitis

- High/low blood pressure

- Heart Conditions

- Osteoporosis

- Arthritis

- Acute Rhumatism

- Cancer

- Medical Odema

- Spastic conditions

- Kidney infections

- Trapped/pinched nerve (sciatica, neuritis)

- Nervous system disfunctions such as:

  - Multiple sclerosis

  - Motor Neurone Disease

  - Parkinsons disease

- Nervous or Psychotic conditions

- Epilepsy

- Recent operations

- Any condition being treated by a GP or another

  complementary therapist

LOCALISED RESTRICTIVE CONTRAINDICATIONS:

A specific area of the clients body cannot recieve any form of treatment.

Some examples of localised restrictive contraindications are:

- Localised swelling

- Varicose veins

- Slipped disc (herniated disc)

- Cuts, bruises, abrasions

TOTAL RESTRICTIVE CONTRAINDICATIONS:

The client is completely restricted from receiving any form of treatment.

Some examples of total restrictive contraindications are:

- Fever

- Contagious or infectious diseases

- Diarrhoea or vomitting

- Pregnancy (1st trimester)

- Skin diseases*

- Haematoma

- Just eaten a meal

- Sunburn*

- Recent Operations*:

  - 2 years for major surgery

  - 6 months minor surgery (small scar)

- Recent fractures* (3 months)

- Under the influence of alcohol or drugs

*Some contraindications such as minor surgery or sunburn can be localised or total restrictive contraindications depending on the size and severity of the problem.

IF A THERAPIST CANNOT FULLY EXPLAIN TO YOU ALL THE CONTRAINDICATIONS RELATED TO A SPECIFIC HEALTH ISSUE THEN DO NOT HAVE THE TREATMENT. IF IN ANY DOUBT, ALWAYS SPEAK TO YOUR GP OR CONSULTANT FIRST.
